A partnership to keep the community clean, green and safe proceeds
RABIE RIDGE – Stakeholders hope to help the Rabie Ridge community develop a culture of cleaning the environment and to stop illegal dumping.
Various role players joined forces with the community recently to help keep Rabie Ridge clean.
Maru Ciberconnect, a non-government organisation that cleans up local communities, along with the Ward 80 community members, the Environmental Infrastructure and Services Department (EISD) and Pikitup combined their efforts on 1 March as part of a drive to clean the suburb.

Locals, Maru Ciberconnect environmental champions, members of the EISD and Pikitup staff met at the Rabie Ridge Community Hall before heading onto Freedom Drive, Falcon Street, Stilt Avenue and then Korhaan Crescent to promote and practise cleanliness.

Ward 80 councillor Makgoba Pagadi explained that they had targeted these five streets because they were the centre of the community and were used by everyone every day. “Those are the streets circulating the Rabie Ridge precinct which holds the community hall, Rabie Ridge Police Station, Rabie Ridge Stadium, Mathole Motshekga Primary School, Dulcie September Primary and the Allan Ridge Secondary School,” said Pagadi.

“We decided to join forces, through my community cleaning programme ‘Twice a month clean-up campaign’, that I launched in 2017, as well as the Kleena Joburg campaign that the MMC for EISD Mphoe Moerane and chairperson for the EISD councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe joined to show our people that they must take responsibility and make sure that their area is healthy for residing in, especially in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.”

Joyline Josamu, chief executive officer for Maru Ciberconnect added that they want to keep Rabie Ridge clean, green and safe for all. The organisation works to improve the quality of lives of previously disadvantaged South African communities “We believe that through this clean-up campaign, we will have our communities develop a culture of cleaning up the environment and also stop illegal dumping.”
