Hilton added that they are on a big transformation drive to really try and make them leaders in terms of transformation and diversity in the Greater Midrand community. “The schools are already diverse as it is, but not the staff per se. We have done the school strategy in terms of the bigger picture going forward.

He said that the first session was held on 31 March, with himself as well as Allistar Fredericks, who runs the hockey academy at Beaulieu, and Liz Ashmore, head of sport at Beaulieu College. He said they were talking about the sports strategy in terms of where they were going to take it, particularly also around girls’ sport such as girls’ soccer and girls’ basketball.

“On 12 May, myself and Thembi Mashigo KSG group head of transformation, diversity and inclusion, drew out the broad framework of our transformation agenda. Tonight we are back to transformation and diversity again to discuss our plan in terms of the timeline and what we are going to be doing in the next three and a half months. “

Thembi Mashigo said that they were expanding on what they had put forward and while also taking parents, students and stakeholders in the community on their journey. “We thought we should add student voices into the discussion because this is mainly for them that we are creating a school that is embracing of differences and really a school that when you show up, you do not have to worry about being black, or of a different sexuality, spirituality or even religion.”

She concluded that they were scrapping all the labels which were sources of prejudice and discrimination.
