Elderly locals get a hand
MIDRAND – Midrand resident Ernie Browne, has dedicated herself to the wellbeing of the elderly, taking them to get vaccinated if ever they needed help going to a site that they have been referred too.
Midrand resident Ernie Browne has dedicated her time to ensure that
elderly residents in the community get their vaccines.
Browne said when vaccine registrations opened for people aged 60 years and above, she realised that a lot of people who were eligible were not registering, simply because they were digitally challenged.
She is committed to helping transport the elderly to vaccination sites. “When vaccinations opened and people were weary of going to some of the sites because they were in high crime areas, I could easily help them to go get their vaccine.
“And it is nice to have someone with you, which was why I did it.”
Browne added that with the help of her local ward councillor, Annette Deppe, she was able to advertise her initiative for the elderly and had started receiving calls. “Somebody I do not even know offered to lend me their wheelchair, just in case the people that I take need it.
“So far, I have taken quite a few people, mostly to Midrand Fire Station or the Dischem vaccine sites.
“I am so passionate about getting the elderly vaccinated because they are at risk and we all have a gogo or a grandpa in our family or neighbourhood who we love and want to see them healthy and not be scared of going outside.
” So to vaccinate them is of utmost importance to me.”
Browne said she had joined different neighbourhood social media pages to spread the word.
