Christ Church Preparatory School learners enjoyed a visit from the Mini Science Lab on 11 June where they encountered the wonders of science.
Marketing manager at the school Dawn Schmitz said, “Many exciting experiments were conducted, showing how chemistry and physics can create amazing sights and sounds.”
An ice-cream mushroom experiment used a combination of citric acid, milk and bicarbonate of soda which caused an ice-cream looking substance to ooze out of the top.
This was followed by the snow experiment. Glasses were filled with water, food colouring and sodium polyacrylate. The water – almost instantly – turned into a powdery substance which looked like coloured snow and was cool to the touch.
Schmitz said learners also experienced what happened when potassium permanganate and glycerine were combined. These items were carefully mixed on a clay tile and after a few seconds there was a wonderful display of light.
“Many other exciting experiments were conducted, all of which taught the pupils something about science. What a wonderful educational experience the children had.”
