Locals provide emergency food relief to help families affected by riots in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal

MIDRAND – Dhevan Pillay encouraged community members in and outside the Midrand area to join the collaborative effort as it would allow for immediate relief and sustainability of the programme for the duration of an uncertain, difficult period which the country has only just entered.

Through their community outreach initiative, LTM Energy and Food For Life Midrand called for an urgent request for sponsorship on July 15 to provide emergency food relief to families in KwaZulu-Natal and regions affected by protest action and looting.

Dhevan Pillay, strategic advisor for Food For Life South Africa Midrand branch and CEO for LTM Energy said the crisis South Africa faced as a result of mounting protest action, has in reality left many families without food security.

He explained that it was no longer only the poverty-stricken members of society who were uncertain of where the next plate of food would come from, but growing concerns about compromised retailers, supply chains and restricted movements due to safety risks, were resulting in a crisis for many living in the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng,
thus far.

“Through a countrywide footprint of over 29 branches, our vision is to alleviate hunger in every community, through the distribution of freshly prepared plant-based meals, served with love. Food for Life SA is recognised by Food for Life Global, currently, the world’s largest vegan/vegetarian food relief programme, funded solely by donations.

“We also have Section 18A status with the South African Revenue Service, which allows for a tax rebate on all donations. Food for Life South Africa recognises the need to collaborate, forming key partnerships, to stand a chance of assisting in resolving the current challenges.”
He said that they are working to create a basic food package that includes dried foods such as beans, rice, flour and sugar.

Pillay emphasised that they could not succeed alone and needed help. He encouraged members of the community to join the collaborative effort as every contribution was channelled through effective administration. He concluded that it would allow for immediate relief and sustainability of the programme for the duration of an uncertain, difficult period which the country has only just entered.
