CEO Bokang Mosala said they wanted to help on Mandela Day and decided to make a difference in their community through a local organisation. However, because of the earlier unrest, they wanted to see if they could do something which would be sustainable.

“Jancke Strydom, who is in charge of our community social investment, came across this centre, visited the centre and saw the condition it was in. We then became touched by their story and decided not to do a once-off thing but rather make a firmer commitment and see how we can assist them every month.

“We brought mealie meal, canned foods, sugar and so forth. Basically, things that have a longer shelf life and can be used every day as well.
“We are not contributing food alone. We have decided to help some of the girls who are in tertiary with workplace training. They can come to our offices over the weekends and get computer training and other skills, including how one manages themselves so they can have experience and exposure and become ready for work once they have graduated.”

He added that they would still sit down with the centre’s management to discuss how they could contribute in more ways.

New Life Centre for Girls founder Khopotso Nakin said she felt blessed after receiving the much-needed food donations, adding that it really meant a lot to the organisation, especially since most people have pulled back from donating. “We are still in need of donations, however. Community members could still donate clothes and transport as well as money because that is what we are in need of desperately.”
