Local organisation donates tons of essentials

MIDRAND – Food For Life Midrand called on all South Africans to continue to support the endeavour and help them make a difference to those in need in Kwazulu-Natal

Local food-relief organisation Food For Life Midrand sprung into action after the riots in Kwazulu-Natal to provide assistance to those left destitute in the province.

Due to supply chain disruptions in the Kwazulu-Natal region, the food had to be sourced in Gauteng and transported to Kwazulu-Natal once the N3 was reopened. The food hampers were then lovingly assembled by Food For Life volunteers in Kwazulu-Natal.

Food For Life Midrand partnered with a local sustainable development company, LTM Energy, to raise awareness for this campaign, as well as raise much-needed funds to purchase the required food and toiletries.

To date, more than 36 tons of essential food items have been transported to Kwazulu-Natal in two loads, with parcels designed to last a family of four for one month. More than 1 200 parcels have been distributed by the Kwazulu-Natal branches of Food For Life South Africa covering areas such as Chatsworth, Phoenix and Pietermaritzburg.

Vinesh Maharaj, chairperson for Food For Life Midrand.

Vinesh Maharaj, chairperson of Food For Life Midrand, said, “We launched our social media campaign to raise awareness for this project and were inundated with requests for food. These requests are still continuing for many reasons, including the unemployment that has resulted from the rioting.”

He added, “The food relief would not have been possible without corporate support. A huge thank you and appreciation to all of our generous donors, both business and individuals, who heeded our call for donations.

“In addition, we would like to thank Viveshen Naidoo and Chantel Smith from Petro Gulf for sponsoring the fuel that was required by our transporter, Yashveer Haripersaad from Delta Consolidators, who also did not charge for the many loads required.”
