Local learners experience mini Olympic Games

MIDRAND – Poplar Academy dedided to teach their young learners about the Olympic Games by having them experience it for themselves.

Poplar Academy educated its young learners about the Olympic Games.

Little ones from the age of two to Grade 3s experienced the Olympics first hand when the school’s Poplymics (Poplar mini Olympics) was held on the school grounds in Midrand on August 6.

Organiser and educator at the school Nanti Stewart said that – in the spirit of the Olympics – they wanted to celebrate their learners, just as the Olympics had their athletes.

Stewart added, “We just want to see the coming together of our children doing things the children love doing best which is just playing and being outside because Covid-19 has made it difficult to do such things. Therefore, though we are out in the open, we are wearing our masks and are sanitising.”

Stewart said the school was all about their motto – swifter, stronger and higher – which they lived by every single day. “Children also do not know about the Olympics, so we are creating awareness about the Olympics. Earlier on we had an assembly where we showed the kids videos of our recently titled champions such as Tatjana Schoenmaker and the learners loved it.”

Stewart explained that the programme was divided into two parts. The first part included gymnastics, weight lifting, javelin throw tennis and short putt and the second included running races, relays, walkathons and sprints. The day was then ended with medals being awarded.

Coach and founder of the Tots Game Gymnastics Nelson Midzi applauded the learners as they had used all their experience from training on weekends. “The learners are doing very well despite the challenges brought forward by the Covid-19 restrictions,” he concluded.
