This was part of the Ward’s Women’s Day initiative, initiated by councillor Annette Deppe. The event is held annually and has been held for the past 15 years. It strives to unite women of all races and ages from different backgrounds and this year the event was held at Tashas in Mall of Africa.

Explaining what Women’s Day meant to her, Deppe said it was commemorating the day in which all women fought for equality and fought against the pass laws. She added that it was time for women to fix things in South Africa, especially since a lot of the things happening in the country were humanitarian issues, which women were usually better at dealing with.

“There is also a lot of domestic violence and females that cannot talk to each other properly anymore, making hurtful statements to each other. With that said, women need to become mentors and impart their skills to the younger generation. That means not becoming self-centered but rather thinking of the younger generation and helping them because a lot of the young girls do not have mentors at home,” Deppe added.

Mokgadi Banda, a Ward 132 resident who attended the lunch, said it would always be a challenge to both women and men in society to believe women could contribute more than just being in the kitchen.

“Today has actually made it possible for us to express our abilities in different departments. For instance, there are women in the construction industry and we have women representatives in parliament. I think that a lot has been done, but there is still work that needs to be done for women to be on par with men in our society.”

She concluded that it was just a matter of women being given a fair share of recognition as game changers, as the world would stand still without them.
