Midrand SPCA saves a dog out of a manhole on Dale Road
MIDRAND – According to Midrand SPCA chairperson Brenda Lucas, the team was alerted that a dog was stuck in a manhole amongst what appeared to be rotten cow carcasses and other items of trash.
The Midrand SPCA made yet another rescue on August 3, saving a dog out of a manhole on Dale Road in Glen Austin.
According to Brenda Lucas, chairperson for the Midrand SPCA, the team was alerted that a dog was stuck in a manhole amongst what appeared to be rotten cow carcasses and other items of trash.

She said Inspector Jerry Seemise and their general manager, Inspector Pam Pretorius rushed out to the scene. “Upon their arrival, they saw this curled up bundle that seemed to have given up on life, lying amongst the filth and decay,” Lucas said.
“This poor dog did not even look up at the sight of our team that had come to its aid. Our team did not hesitate in jumping into the decayed and rotten materials to bring this baby to safety.

“The stench was absolutely awful and made your stomach turn, yet our team couldn’t care less for their own clothing and the smell that would linger for the rest of the day. The dog was taken to the safety of our society and given a nice bath before undergoing a health check.”
Lucas thanked the contractor and Pikitup members who called on the SPCA to alert them to the plight of this beautiful dog.
“He will never know pain and suffering like this ever again. After our team attended to the dog’s needs, they took a shower, changed their clothes and carried on with their busy day.”
Muzi Mkhwanazi, spokesperson for Pikitup, commended the contractor and Pikitup for alerting the SPCA, adding that had it not been for their quick thinking, the poor dog could have lost its life. “We also appeal to residents to refrain from illegally dumping and urge them to report those who do so to the Johannesburg Metro Police.”
