Help Midrand SPCA save animals

MIDRAND – General manager, Inspector Pam Pretorius says Midrand SPCA wants to have an animal outreach on October 23.

General manager, Inspector Pam Pretorius, said they would like to have the event on October 23 but this will all be dependent on whether they have sufficient sponsors.

She said they recently celebrated World Rabies Day on September 28 and the day once again highlighted the importance of ensuring animals are vaccinated and treated against parasitic infestation.

“While this day highlighted rabies and the importance of vaccinating your pets to prevent this fatal virus in both pets and humans… The number of reported cases is far lower currently than the number of diseases that we deal with that are causing animals immense suffering and death,” she added.

“Parvovirus, as an example, is one of the viruses that we deal with daily as well as cases of biliary [tick bite fever] which is one of the most common infectious diseases in cats and dogs.”

Pretorius added that worm infestations can also cause serious health issues for animals, and even death if left untreated.

She said many pet owners cannot afford to have their animals vaccinated against or treated for these diseases and, in many cases, they also do not have transport to bring their animals in for treatment. This results in many animals suffering and being untreated. Although home remedies are tried, this can also compromise the animals’ health and well-being. “It is therefore important that our SPCA plays a role in doing our outreaches and educational sessions in the local impoverished communities to assist as many animals and their owners in need.”

Pretorius said that for as little as a R20 donation, community members can support to deworm a dog, R50 will help vaccinate against rabies and R300 will help sterilise an animal.
