Alex Tau, principal at Noordwyk Secondary School shared some of his school’s highlights this year.
Tau said in terms of hurdles they have faced this year the biggest was Covid-19.
“With the system of rotation, we have had a year where children were taking turns in attending classes and that has been the biggest hurdle. We had to double the workload and teachers had to do repeat lessons,” added Tau.
“The other challenge we had this year was that of space because as soon as you slice the whole school then you need extra classes and manpower. So we have not been fortunate in having those sort of resources to be able to move forward.”
Generally, with all these particular hurdles experienced, Tau said they still did pretty well as a school because they managed to resolve most of the challenges they had.
“Our children have done well, it looks like to a certain extent they are also adapting to the circumstances especially considering that last year it was very bad.”
Looking back at their highlights this year, Tau said hosting three key citizens of Gauteng, namely the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, and Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was indeed something to be proud of.
“We also had a successful election of our school governing body. And we have had a brilliant soccer team, they have been scooping all the trophies around Gauteng we even got a donation from the Department of Sports at the education head office to support our team.
“I would love to wish the community of Midrand a safe and happy new year in the midst of Covid-19. I also advise those people travelling to travel safely.”
