Drug awareness campaign underway in schools

HALFWAY HOUSE – The campaign comes after a suspect was arrested for being in possession of dagga and selling it to learners.

Local police will embark on a drug awareness campaign at schools.

According to Constable Eliot Mabulane, spokesperson for Midrand Police Station, this comes after a man was arrested around 12:00 on February 8 for having dagga in his possession and selling it to schoolchildren.

Mabulane said police approached the man and learners from a school. After noticing that the police were on to them, the learners dropped the marijuana and ran away.

“We hope this arrest will serve as a deterrence to those who are dealing and selling [drugs] to minors as it affects their future and contributes towards Ill discipline at school.

“As campaigns are underway to address the abuse of illegal substances in the schools and the community. We urge parents to have a closer look at their children’s behaviour and if there are any signs of drug use, it should be reported to the police.”

Mabulane concluded that the station’s social crime prevention, youth desk, crime prevention, and other role players will be a part of this school programme to address drug and substance issues.
