Midrand police encourage locals to report crimes

HALFWAY HOUSE – The Midrand Police Station paid the homeless a visit to let them know that they also can report crimes.

The Midrand Police Station embarked on a crime outreach in Halfway House to form a partnership with the homeless and encourage them to report crime.

Colonel Nhlanhla Sibisi, head of Visible Policing (Vispol) at the Midrand Police Station said that the purpose of the visit on February 15 was to interact with the homeless and address the contact crimes that were being committed in Midrand.

Sibisi said that as police, they were very concerned about the level of contact crimes that took place in the Midrand. Therefore, they look forward to building and enforcing a relationship with all residents so that they could report to the police and provide them with any possible information relating to crimes in the area.

“There have been numerous cases where they, the homeless, stab one another – especially over the weekends, and the perpetrators are not being attended to or being brought to book. “We hope that they can come forward with possible information that can lead to the possible arrest of the perpetrators.”

Sibisi said that this was one of the mechanisms they were employing in order to enforce a relationship with all residents, no matter their nationality. He said he hopes they can draw them all closer and build a trusting relationship to ensure that everyone felt free to provide police with information that can lead to the conviction of criminals.

“Whether you are coming within or outside the borders of South Africa, as long as the information you furnish will lead to a possible arrest of a criminal, that information is more than welcomed by the South African Police Service.”

Sibisi said anyone who wants to report crimes could contact him on 080 773 3638. All information will be treated as confidential and the identity of informants will be protected.
