Off duty officer comes to the rescue

Midrand, Noordwyk, Child neglect, Midrand Police Station

An off duty Metro police officer with the help of community members saved the day after a young boy was apparently abandoned by two women and a man in Noordwyk on February 20.

According to Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla, while off duty and at home, officer Sithembile Malgas was called by members of the public regarding a child who had been abandoned in Sagewood Street, Noordwyk.

Fihla said it was alleged by a witness that an unknown woman who was driving a white Volkswagen Polo with a male and female passenger, abandoned the boy who was between the ages of two and three and drove off. Unfortunately, no one was able to get the vehicle’s registration. “Officer Malgas together with the witness took the child to the Midrand Police Station and handed him over to the police.

The boy will be taken to a place of safety. “Metro police Acting Chief of Police Angie Mokasi applauds officer Malgas who even though off duty, took his time to assist the community and the baby boy,” Fihla added. Fihla said a case of child neglect had been opened at Midrand Police Station for further investigation.

“Anyone who has information regarding the abandonment of the child is requested to contact the National Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or report the matter at Midrand SAPS.”
