Residents are encouraged to report community issues

The ward councillor stressed the importance of residents working with community leaders and joining community groups to stay informed of and report issues.

Community members addressed their service delivery concerns directly with relevant entities during a recent meeting.

Issues such as poor conditions of the roads and infrastructure, safety and security, municipal service delivery, and building and zoning in Ward 110 areas were discussed at the meeting, hosted by the President Park Residents Association (PPRA) on May 7.

Association chairman Miguel Assis said the City strives to create a safe and secure environment for all residents, and to maintain, preserve and enhance infrastructure, the aesthetic character and the atmosphere of the area. To accomplish this, he urged residents to report issues, in particular crimes, to the authorities. “If we don’t report them [issues], then there is no record of them happening,” he said.

A resident from Austin View, Tsitsi Mogale, suggested issues should be reported to the councillor and the association, as they are the ones most likely to be able to speak with government officials. “There are many issues such as cable theft and potholes that we have reported to the Joburg Road Agency (JRA) and the police, but no action has been taken. Our service is generally poor here in Midrand,” Mogale claimed.

In response to the allegations of cable theft, Midrand Police Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said the police are aware of incidents of cable theft in Midrand areas, and that nine suspects have been arrested in the past three weeks.

The Midrand Reporter contacted JRA regarding the allegations, however, no comment had been received at the time of publication.

Ward 110 councillor Angie Mphaho stressed the importance of residents working with community leaders and joining community groups to stay informed of and report issues.

“This meeting is intended to build capacity among the PPRA, residents as well as various stakeholders through increased membership and raising funds for community improvement projects. We will also ensure effective communication channels to create a sense of community and share important information between them,” Mphaho said.
