JW wastes water, not adhering to their warning – Summerset resident

Rhona Rakow, a Summerset Estate manager says although the leaking pipe was fixed, JW employees left a huge mess on Nedburg Street.

A frustrated Summerset Estate resident in Noordwyk has accused Johannesburg Water (JW) of wasting water – a scarce resource – because of their ‘delayed turnaround time’.

Bridget Theunissen said she and the estate manager Rhona Rakow reported a burst water pipe on Nederburg Street to JW on March 19 and the water utility only came on March 30 to fix it – almost two weeks later. Theunissen said they had constantly followed up their logged call with JW and also got other residents involved.

She decided to contact the publication on March 29 and said, “We have a new problem. A burst water pipe resulted in running water for more than two weeks. We have made numerous phone calls and provided reference numbers but still no sight of Joburg Water. It is on the pavement and it’s JW that needs to fix it. I thought all South Africans have been asked and encouraged not to waste water.

Rakow added, “The leak was so bad. Since they have fixed it, they left a huge mess when they left and they also opened the fire hose for over two hours to just run. They have left the street in a total mess than what it was before.”

JW was contacted on April 4 to find out why the turnaround time had taken so long. A reminder was sent via an email on April 8 but JW had not responded at the time of going to print.
