Midrand police see spike in truck hijacking on the N1 highway

Both the N1 North and South in Midrand are experiencing a spike in truck hijackings, mostly happening in the early hours.

Midrand police spokesperson and social crime prevention coordinator Sergeant Thabiso Angelina Selowa-Kutu urged motorists and truck drivers remain vigilant.

Selowa-Kutu said this when speaking to Midrand Reporter on October 2 at the Midrand Police Station in Halfway Gardens.

She said this was happening between 08:00–12:00 midday as well as 16:00–18:00, using the same modus operandi.

“As Midrand police, we are experiencing high truck hijackings on the N1 North and South, where the hijackers are in a car and wave at you. The hijackers then signal to the driver of the truck about a ‘flat tyre’ and when the truck driver stops to check or verify if it’s true, then they get robbed of their belongings, including cellphones,” said Selowa-Kutu.
