Pikitup spokesperson, Muzi Mkhwanazi, said as a result, they have developed schedules to attend and address illegal dumping challenges.

Mkhwanazi was responding to the article, Pikitup mum on President Park, [Week ending 31 October 2025].

He said the site will form part of the depot’s weekly monitoring service and be included in the operational illegal dumping clearing schedule for the area.

“Pikitup is on record stating that ensuring a cleaner city is a collective responsibility, and to that effect, residents must avoid dumping waste illegally. Residents must exercise their civic responsibilities to prevent illegal dumping by reporting illegal dumpers to the [authorities] and by adopting responsible waste management practices, such as separating waste from source and recycling their waste,” he said.
He added that Pikitup is consistently engaging or educating residents about the negative impact of illegal dumping on health and the environment, as well as its negative economic aspects.

Asked if the closure of the Dale Road garden site in 2017 was not contributing to the scourge, he said it would be difficult to answer positively or negatively without a comprehensive investigation or study.

“In general, however, the city has seen incidences of littering and illegal dumping occasioned by densely populated areas, illegal settlements, homelessness and to an extent insufficient waste by-law enforcement, to mention but a few factors.”
