Waterfall City Athletics Club runner’s maiden Cross Country Championship participation

Zanele Masia says she is ecstatic to be a part of the championship and finally achieve her long-awaited goal to represent the country at an international level.

After a vigorous Athletics South Africa (ASA) trial in Tshwane, Waterfall City Athletics Club (WCAC) runner Zanele Masia is beaming with pride following her qualification to represent South Africa at next year’s Cross Country Championship.

Masia, who finished fifth with a time of 02:38.40, will compete in the 10km race alongside elite runners Glenrose Xaba, Karabo Mailula, Ccisile Sosibo, Cian Oldknow, and Kyla Jacobs.

The championship is set to take place on January 10, 2026, in Tallahassee, Florida. Masia credited her achievement to hard work and dedication, marking her first inclusion in the ASA 10km squad.

“It was a great feeling because it was my first time going to the trials, and I made it to the Top 5, so I was extremely happy. My first attempt went well; I was so proud of myself,” said Masia.

When asked about her preparations and areas for improvement ahead of the championship, she said she was focused on enhancing her performance and pushing herself further.

Masia added that being among South Africa’s top runners was a confidence booster.
“I’m going there for experience and exposure, to run with the world’s elite women.

The important part is to finish the race with a cross-country personal best time. It encourages me every time. It reminds me that I still have to work hard.”

“Zanele, you carry not only the colours of your country but also the spirit of the Blue Wave wherever you go. We are inspired by your journey and the example you set for all our athletes, proving that hard work and heart make dreams possible,” said Ndonyane.

She encouraged Masia to run her race and make the club proud, affirming that all WCAC members were behind her every step of the way.
