Summerhill nursery learner praised for handling medical emergency

As children enjoy more outdoor play during the festive season, accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, but for six-year-old Summerhill learner Leano Ndlovu, school lessons on safety and first aid proved invaluable when his brother was injured at a playground.

With the festive season in full swing, and children spending more time outdoors, moments of play can sometimes turn unexpectedly serious.

That reality unfolded in early December when Leano Ndlovu, a learner at Summerhill School SA’s nursery, showed remarkable calm and maturity during a medical emergency at his residential complex playground.

Leano (6) had gone to the playground with his brother to play soccer when the game took an unexpected turn. His brother sustained a serious cut to his chin, leaving the young Leano faced with a situation that could easily have overwhelmed a child his age.

Instead, Leano remained calm. He borrowed a cell phone from a nearby adult and immediately contacted his mother. Although she was not at home at the time, she arranged for a neighbour to assist.

Demonstrating maturity beyond his years, Leano then phoned his mother again to confirm that it was safe for him and his injured brother to go with the neighbour.

Summerhill Nursery principal Sonya Toet praised Leano for applying the lessons taught during the school’s first aid and safety workshops. “We are incredibly proud of Leano and the calm manner in which he handled the situation. He was able to draw directly from the first aid workshops presented to the children this year, which included how to call for help in an emergency and how to deal safely with blood and injuries.”

Toet added that Leano also remembered key safety messages from the school’s stranger danger awareness sessions. “He was mindful of not leaving with an unfamiliar person and made sure to confirm with his mother before going with the neighbour. Well done, Leano. You have set a shining example for those around you.”
