Midrand residents hit by power outage days after water disruptions
Midrand residents barely had time to recover from water outages when electricity failures struck Noordwyk and surrounding areas, raising concerns about service delivery during the festive period.
Just days after enduring prolonged water interruptions following Rand Water maintenance, Midrand residents, particularly in Noordwyk, face another service delivery setback, this time due to electricity outages that left several neighbourhoods in the dark.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena stated that the power interruptions, from December 20, were caused by multiple cable faults affecting key areas in Noordwyk, including 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th Roads. “Following an extensive process of testing, we are pleased to inform customers in Noordwyk that we have finally managed to locate the cable faults. Due to unexpected delays, we had to revise the estimated time of restoration to 21:00 [on December 23].”

He confirmed that the outage in Noordwyk was affecting 8th Road, 9th Road, and 11th Road, with repair work already underway. Progress, however, was initially hampered by persistent heavy rainfall, which made it unsafe and technically challenging to conduct fault testing. “Wet ground conditions interfere with testing equipment. Once conditions improved, we were able to complete testing.”
After successfully locating and testing the fault in Noordwyk, City Power teams moved on to Rabie Ridge, where residents in extensions 1 and 2 also experienced supply interruptions.
Mangena said the feeder cable fault had been identified, but repairs would only commence on the morning of December 24, due to safety concerns and poor visibility at night.

City Power also acknowledged an electricity outage affecting parts of Halfway House, supplied from the Church switching station. The outage was reported at around 17:00 on December 22 and was also attributed to a cable fault. “Approximately 40% of supply has been restored. However, six load centres remain off due to an existing fault.” Affected areas include the Midrand Medical Centre, McDonald’s, as well as parts of Heather Road and Kingsway Road.
City Power confirmed that both faults had now been located and that repairs would start on December 24, once the required permits were in place. “We understand the frustration caused by these prolonged outages, particularly during this period, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
