Midrand water supply stabilises for Christmas following Rand Water maintenance

Following Rand Water’s mid-December maintenance, most Midrand reservoirs are now back to stable supply.

After weeks of uncertainty and intermittent water shortages, Johannesburg Water has confirmed that the Midrand water system is currently stable, with most reservoirs supplying residents fairly to adequately.

In an update issued on December 26, Johannesburg Water said it continues to implement water demand management measures, including throttling and, in some cases, temporarily closing outlets to reduce water losses and manage demand across the network.

The update follows Rand Water’s planned maintenance work carried out in mid-December to improve the city’s bulk water infrastructure. While the maintenance was aimed at strengthening long-term supply, it left several areas, including parts of Midrand, without water for extended periods, even after the work had been completed, frustrating residents and businesses.

Johannesburg Water previously cautioned that some areas across the city, including Midrand, could continue to experience intermittent water supply challenges as the system stabilised. However, the entity has since reassured residents that efforts are being made to ensure consistent water availability in the area.

According to the latest status report, the Erand reservoir is currently supplying adequately, while the Erand tower is on bypass and supplying fairly. Both the Grand Central reservoir and tower, as well as the Rabie Ridge reservoir and tower, are supplying adequately.

President Park reservoir is currently supplying fairly, though Johannesburg Water warned that residents may experience poor water pressure at times. The President Park tower remains on bypass and is supplying fairly.

In neighbouring areas, the Diepsloot reservoir is supplying adequately, while the Steyn City reservoir is supplying fairly.
