Festive travel under watch as EMPD tightens grip

Public transport operators were reminded that road safety is non-negotiable after police recorded multiple violations during a targeted roadblock on R562 in Clayville.

A festive season public transport operation, conducted by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), has resulted in multiple arrests, traffic fines, and the removal of unroadworthy vehicles from the road.

The joint operation, carried out on the R562 near Phumulani Mall, brought together officers from the EMPD Clayville, Winnie Mandela, and Tembisa precincts, alongside the First Response Unit (FRU) North. The initiative comes as commuter volumes increase, with many residents travelling home during the holiday period.

Officers focused on ensuring vehicle roadworthiness, enforcing driver compliance with traffic laws, and improving overall public safety on one of the area’s busy routes.

According to EMPD, the operation yielded significant results. A total of 109 traffic fines were issued, while three vehicles were discontinued for failing to meet road safety standards. Officers also arrested one illegal immigrant and another individual for failing to furnish information and for intimidation. In total, 168 vehicles were stopped and searched during the operation.

The EMPD has reiterated its call to public transport operators to fully comply with road regulations and prioritize passenger safety, especially during the festive season when road traffic volumes and accident risks are traditionally higher.
