Unsung hero of animal welfare faces real danger at Midrand SPCA
While carrying out his daily duties at the Midrand SPCA, Daniel Musuko never expected his routine shift to end in hospital when a violent dog attack left him with facial injuries.
They care for animals, tend the grounds, and keep shelters safe, often without recognition.
But last week, the quiet dedication of Midrand SPCA staff was violently interrupted when one of their own was attacked in a frightening on-duty incident.
Daniel Musuko, a valued caretaker at SPCA, was badly bitten on the face while on duty on January 24, after a dog suddenly acted unpredictably. The attack happened in seconds but left lasting trauma for those who witnessed it.

SPCA general manager inspector Pam Pretorius described the incident as harrowing.
“It was like a scene from a horror movie…” she said. The bite was so severe that it cut a vein in his face, and if he had not been wearing sunglasses, he could have lost an eye. His sunglasses were destroyed, and the shock of the attack left our members all shaking.”
Despite the chaos, the SPCA team responded with remarkable courage and professionalism. Pretorius immediately administered first aid to stabilise Musuko, while other staff members rushed in with medical kits and safely contained the dog.
At the same time, they ensured that staff, visitors, and nearby children were kept out of danger.
Once Musuko was stabilised, Pretorius and inspector Jerry Seemise transported him to the hospital, remaining by his side until he received stitches and proper medical care. He was later discharged.

Pretorius said the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of irresponsible pet ownership.
“This is a stark reminder that aggressive dogs don’t appear out of nowhere. Many are the result of confinement, chaining, lack of training, or owners who do not understand the breed they keep. Responsible pet ownership is not optional; it’s a matter of safety for your community, staff, and your animals,” said Pretorius.
Beyond his role as a caretaker, Musuko is also responsible for maintaining the SPCA’s gardens and grounds, playing a vital role in making the facility safe, welcoming, and functional for animals, staff, and the public.
“We wish Daniel a full and speedy recovery and thank our heroic team for their quick and courageous response.”
