Rand Water completes repairs at Zuikerbosch plant

After a power failure affected water systems across Johannesburg, Zuikerbosch engine room 4 has been repaired and normalisation is underway.

UPDATE: Rand Water has successfully completed repairs to Zuikerbosch engine room 4, normalising pumping into the Palmiet systems at around 03:00 this morning.

According to a statement released by Johannesburg Water, both the impacted Rand Water and Johannesburg Water reservoirs are critically low, and systems are currently in the process of recovery.

Johannesburg Water previously stated that Rand Water experienced an internal power failure at its Zuikerbosch pumping station on January 27, compounding the situation.

The power failure affected operations at the Palmiet, Eikenhof, and Zwartkopjes systems, with Palmiet the most severely affected, pumping no water at the time.

As a result, several Midrand suburbs, and other parts of Johannesburg, were left without water from January 28, including Midrand Ridge, Crescentwood Country Estate, Crescent Glades Estate, Fountain View, Surrey Hills, and San Ridge Heights, to name a few.

“While normal pumping has resumed from the bulk supplier side,” said Johannesburg Water in a statement, “it must be noted that the systems may take between three to five days to recover fully and achieve stability.”

Systems which are still struggling to recover include Illovo reservoir and tower, Bryanston tower, Diepsloot reservoir, Grand Central tower, President Park and Rabie Ridge, Alexander Park reservoir, Hursthill reservoirs, as well as the South Hills tower.

“Although other systems within the supply area, such as Linksfield, Yeoville, Crown Gardens, and Erand Reservoir, are at low levels, they are showing signs of stability.”

Johannesburg Water is closely monitoring the system in order to implement the necessary reconfiguration of supply should the need arise. Contingency plans are in place and being communicated accordingly.
