Standing ovation for success as Curro New Road honours top learners

From top achievers to future leaders, Curro New Road honoured learners whose hard work, resilience, and determination shone through at its 2025 Academic Awards Ceremony.

Curro New Road hosted its annual academic awards ceremony on February 6, honouring learners who rose above challenges to achieve outstanding results during 2025.

The well-attended ceremony, which continues to grow each year, celebrated not only academic achievement but also the personal journeys behind every success. Learners, parents, educators, and guests gathered to applaud hard work, perseverance, and leadership.

Former Curro New Road learner Mphoentle Tshehla returned to the school as the master of ceremonies, setting an inspiring tone for the evening, while executive head Nosipho Sishuba, in delivering her keynote address, spoke passionately about the resilience shown by learners in the face of personal and social challenges.

“Many of our learners have faced real challenges in their careers. Some have lost parents, some have lost family members, friends, and some have had to grow up far too quickly. Others have had to navigate issues with identity, self-worth, and peer pressure, and the complex emotions that come with being a young person in today’s world.”

She emphasised that education goes beyond textbooks and exam results. “High school is not just about academics; it is also about learning who we are and where we belong. This is why tonight matters. We are saying to our learners: ‘We see your effort’. Even when life is hard, we are saying your resilience counts. We are saying you are more than just your circumstances.”

Sishuba congratulated award recipients for their achievements, while also encouraging learners who did not receive awards to remain hopeful. She further highlighted the importance of recognising the learning journey, not just final results. “When a learner excels in a subject, they are not only mastering content; they are learning focus, responsibility, and confidence, and these skills deserve to be recognised.”

The ceremony also celebrated the school’s Bright Awards, which Sishuba described as central to Curro New Road’s values, and officially introduced the 2026 prefect body. “Prefects are not chosen because they are perfect; they are chosen because they show leadership potential, responsibility, and a willingness to serve.”
