Midrand’s crime battle shifts to complexes with forum relaunch

Midrand Police Station hosts a meeting with residents and complex representatives to relaunch the Complex Forum, aimed at strengthening crime prevention.

In a renewed effort to curb crime across Midrand, the Midrand Police Station has re-established the Complex Forum, bringing together residents and representatives from various residential complexes to elect a new committee.

The forum, which had previously existed but had become inactive over time, is being revived as part of ongoing efforts to improve communication and co-ordination between police, private security, and residents.

Although the meeting on March 18 had low attendance, some attendees raised concerns about the need to improve outreach strategies to ensure broader participation and representation from all sectors of Midrand. They emphasised the importance of ensuring residents understand which policing sector they fall under and how to engage effectively with local safety structures.

The newly elected committee will be led by chairperson Mpho Khoele, with Koketso Time serving as secretary. Additional members include Srikanth Mudili, Chris Naidoo, and Lerato Myaka.

Addressing the meeting, Midrand Vispol support commander Lieutenant Colonel Mmakgomo Ronny Semono highlighted the importance of collaboration between police and communities living in gated complexes.

“There is a need for this [Complex Forum] to work. Remember, police are policing. We are patrolling the outskirts of your complexes. Your complexes have securities, and we, every day, have the solidarity forum, where we discuss crime. Every security company gives us a presentation as to how many times they patrol within their complexes within a week, and what sort of crimes are encountered, what is it that is becoming much of a thorny issue.”

He further explained that police access to certain estates is often restricted, making co-operation with residents and security teams critical. Semono also warned residents about the growing threat of criminals impersonating police officers.

“These individuals are often equipped with blue lights, sirens, and even protective gear, making them difficult to identify.

It is important that residents verify any police presence through sector managers or the station before granting access.”

Residents were encouraged to keep contact details of their sector managers on hand and to report any suspicious activity promptly.

Midrand is divided into five policing sectors. Sector 3 manager Sergeant Ngwako Matlhatlha noted the scale of the challenge, revealing that his sector alone includes more than 100 complexes.

“I believe, with the support of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and internal collaboration, we can find ways to improve co-ordination and communication.”

The next Complex Forum meeting is scheduled for April 18 at 11:00. Residents and complex representatives are encouraged to attend and play an active role in strengthening community safety.
