Discussions held to resolve Midrand Police Station traffic and parking crisis

Immediate relief and long-term planning were on the agenda as stakeholders work to untangle traffic congestion at the Midrand Police Station.

Persistent traffic congestion due to parking space shortage at the Midrand Police Station continues to be a serious concern for residents, businesses, and emergency services in the area.

On February 9, a constructive meeting was held with local businesses, the police, and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to address these challenges.

Discussions focused on identifying immediate interventions to relieve congestion and improve access while also committing to developing medium- and long-term solutions to ensure sustainable traffic management around the police station.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe, who attended the meeting, said access to and from the police station is currently severely constrained, creating safety and operational risks.

“Residents are unable to park in the station precinct because police vehicles occupy the available space, and there is no adequate sidewalk parking. As a result, many visitors are forced to park along the street or across the road near the petrol station and walk to the police station, creating safety risks and further congestion,” said Deppe.

In addition, a neighbouring college is experiencing regular obstruction of its entrance due to the same traffic pressures. “This situation poses a significant danger, as emergency vehicles would struggle to enter or exit the area in the event of a disaster or urgent incident.”

Deppe concluded that she will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that practical solutions are implemented urgently to restore safe and efficient access for residents, students, businesses, and emergency services.
