A year of impact from the Midrand Youth Crime Prevention Desk
The most significant achievement for the YCPD this year was undoubtedly the successful Gauteng Anti-Crime High Schools Debate competition.
Since its formation earlier this year, the Midrand Youth Crime Prevention Desk (YCPD) has made significant strides, overcoming both successes and challenges.
The initiative has focused on essential programmes to empower and engage local youth.
A key highlight for the youth desk was a pilot programme that united the community for a vibrant Youth Day march on June 16. Chairperson Bonolo Mashaba noted that the event began at the Midrand Police Station and ended at San Ridge Square, inspired by the urgent need to combat gender-based violence and substance abuse.

On Mandela Day, the YCPD further engaged the community with an interactive session at Walter Sisulu School to educate and inspire the youth. They also led a stimulating debate in Soweto under the theme Honouring the Past and Shaping the Future.

The most significant achievement for the YCPD this year was the successful Gauteng Anti-Crime High Schools Debate competition, which attracted widespread participation and fostered discussions on anti-crime strategies.
Leading up to the finals, the desk trained learners and organised elimination rounds for the competition. Mashaba expressed pride in this event, emphasising its role in promoting critical thinking and dialogue among youth about crime prevention.
Looking ahead, the YCPD is excited for the second annual debate next year, aiming to involve all local schools in discussions on community and national challenges.
Public relations officer Pelonomi Karabo Moselane expressed gratitude to partners including the Community Police Forum, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners South Africa, and several educational institutions such as Curro Midrand Sagewood, Midrand Christian College, Christ Church, Midrand High School, and Hope Fountain Combined School, just to name a few.

“These organisations have significantly supported the YCPD throughout the season, and we appreciate their commitment,” said Moselane.
Nothando Ndima, the youth desk secretary said, “We also look forward to hosting the Digital Forensics Moot Competition and other exciting activities,” Ndima, inviting the community to stay connected for updates on future events.
“As we transition into the new year, may we carry forward the lessons learned, the relationships forged, and the aspirations ignited. Together, let us step into this fresh chapter with renewed vigour and a commitment to making meaningful contributions to ourselves and our communities.”
