Said’s book sale celebrates the power of stories and second chances for vulnerable animals

Keshvi Nair, Said's fundraising manager, said visitors can expect shelves brimming with pre-loved books across every genre at affordable prices.

There is something quietly magical about giving an old book a new home, and something even more profound when that exchange helps change a life.

This will be all the more true as the Society for Animals in Distress (Said) invites the community to a unique celebration of World Book Day. A book sale where stories, second chances, and compassion will come together for a day that promises meaning and joy in equal measure.

Hosted at Said’s farm in Vorna Valley, Midrand, on April 26 from 09:00 to 13:00, fundraising manager Keshvi Nair said this book sale is not just about pages and paper; it’s about purpose. “Every purchase made directly contributes to the essential work Said does for animals in need. Funds raised on the day will go towards critical veterinary care, community outreach, and sustainable support for pets and their families. This event is a reflection of what we stand for: Healing, dignity, and community upliftment. What better way to honour those values than by celebrating the written word?”

Visitors can expect shelves brimming with pre-loved books across every genre, affordable prices, and a heartfelt sense of community spirit. Whether you’re a lover of fiction, an academic at heart, or simply on the hunt for a good bedtime story, there will be something waiting for you.

This family event will also see children entertained with face painting and cheerful activities, while adults can explore Said’s much-loved Barn Shop, filled with second-hand treasures. Light refreshments, coffee, and sweet treats will be available for sale, turning a simple morning into a full experience of community and care.

“In celebration of imagination and creativity, attendees are also encouraged to arrive dressed as their favourite book characters,” added Nair. “An exciting competition will reward the best-dressed participants with special prizes, bringing the world of books to life in the most joyful way. We believe that literature has the power to nurture empathy, and that compassion for animals and people begins with connection. When someone picks up a book at our sale, they are also helping rewrite the story for a struggling animal in our care.”
