Midrand Police Station Commander returns from district with more experience

Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso spent nine months at the district level, where he served as acting district police commissioner. Now, he has returned to his position as Midrand SAPS station commander, bringing the experience with him.

Road rage, which can lead to car collisions, online scams, and domestic violence are some of the crimes Midrand police have to deal with.

This was revealed by Midrand SAPS station commander Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso, whose fresh from occupying the top position in the Johannesburg District.

Tsotsotso served as a deputy to the now-retired Major General Max Masha for three months, before occupying the district commissioner post for six months, while a search for a permanent district commissioner was underway.

Tsotsotso said he is happy with the valuable experience gained at that level, which involved operational strategies and systems. He said he had to account for 42 police stations across the province, instead of just one, reporting directly to the Gauteng provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni.

“I am happy to bring back all that knowledge to the community of Midrand,” said Tsotsotso. “I am happy that while I was away, through the leadership of acting station commander Colonel Hosea Mantji, crime drastically went down. I would like to applaud everyone who was involved.”

While crime stats went down, there are still issues plaguing the area. “We have issues where motorists are involved in road rage incidents, which have resulted in collisions. I urge motorists to be patient with each other on the roads, to avoid such. However, should a collusion occur, the best thing to do is to call metro cops and police to do accident reports.”

He said, with regards to domestic gender-based violence (GBV), some couples tend to withdraw the matter, or the court kicks them out as they smoke peace pipes.

Tsotsotso also appealed to the community to join the reservists, community members trained to become voluntary unpaid police officers, to help bring crime levels down.

“Secondly, another key issue is to urge the community to become informers. A person can come to talk to me, and a top-level officer, to become an informer. For example: if we recover a firearm through the information you provide, you can claim a monetary reward, and, depending on the content of the information, the reward is likely to increase. This information is not reported to anyone, only the police officer you trust.”

Tsotsotso said, he, together with community members, need to address theft of motor vehicles, and theft out of motor vehicles, which occurs mostly at the malls. He urged motorists not to leave items lying around.
