Video: Cash van bombed near Tembisa, locals grab scattered money
The video shows hundreds of community members gathering around the van to help themselves to the cash.
A cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery today (May 5) on Modderfontein Road saw the community scurrying to ‘stash the cash’ after the CIT truck was bombed.
It is unclear at what time the incident occurred, but Midrand Reporter sources informed the paper about the incident at around 8:23am. It is also not clear how many suspects were involved in the robbery and if they managed to get away with the cash.
In a video seen by the publication, community members rushed to the scene to help themselves with leftover cash lying around.

Midrand Reporter contacted Rabie Ridge police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, who referred us to the provincial police.
Captain Tinstwalo Sibeko was also contacted. His response will be published as soon as it becomes available.

According to recent reports, the rise of CIT robberies in Johannesburg has become a significant concern, with incidents escalating in both frequency and violence. In 2023, Gauteng accounted for 32% of the nation’s CIT heists, with Johannesburg being a hotspot for these crimes.
The first two months of 2023 alone saw a 19% increase in CIT robberies compared to the same period in 2022. These crimes have evolved from traditional methods to more sophisticated and violent tactics, including the use of explosives and high-calibre firearms.

Organised syndicates often conduct extensive surveillance on CIT vehicles, planning their attacks with precision and executing them with military-like coordination. The surge in these robberies has prompted law enforcement agencies to enhance their efforts, including the establishment of specialised task teams and increased road visibility.
