Midrand Sector 3 Crime Forum draws interested volunteers to Crowthorne Shopping Centre

Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson urges residents to avoid walking with cellphones and other electronics, as that makes them targets.

Midrand Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson Dinesh Sookdeo said the reception they received from the public during their crime awareness campaign at Crowthorne Shopping Centre was amazing.

The campaign, on May 24, was attended by Midrand police officials and Sector 3 manager Sergeant Ngwako Mathlathla.

They helped the community with filling in affidavits and addressed learners about the dangers of bullying at school and how to report it.

“This has been a positive response based on interactions where residents showed interest in joining the forum,” said Sookdeo. “I worry that we have a positive response now, but once we leave here, people ‘shut down’ when they get to their houses. In Sector 3, we have various communications and urge residents to participate and join the forum to help us reduce crime.”

Sookdeo added Sector 3 was plagued with cellphone snatching incidents, especially on Lever and New roads.

Residents engage with members of the Sector 3 Crime Forum.

He spoke briefly about a trending video of a young woman being robbed of her cellphone on Kiaat Street in Noordwyk. “Look, it’s an ongoing case, and not a lot we can talk about now. What I can share with you is that the perpetrators were driving a white VW Polo, without number plates. We have information that it was four male occupants, and from the video, it seems the crime was planned and the victim was random. They are looking for easy targets.”

Crowthorne resident Chris Ash said, “We want to work together with the forum to foster a caring community to try to keep our area safe. It’s not going to solve it overnight, but I think if we work together and support the police and share information, rather than moaning about what’s going on in this country. It starts at the bottom, and we have to all pull together, that’s my view.”
