Medicross Carlswald creates fun and safe space for children

About 11 children from Yenzani Children’s Home received free dental treatment on Mandela Day, as the clinic believes access to regular dental care helps boost a child's confidence, comfort, and overall quality of life.

“Dental health often goes unnoticed, yet it is critical to a child’s overall development.”

These were the words of Medicross Carlswald clinic manager Khanya Sono as the clinic, in collaboration with Sun Pharma Pharmaceuticals, hosted about 11 children from the Yenzani Children’s Home for free dental treatments and check-ups on Mandela Day, July 18.

“Untreated dental issues can cause pain, infections, and poor nutrition, while also affecting concentration, school performance, confidence, and self-esteem. Recognising this, the team at Medicross Carlswald created a safe, fun, and caring environment where children felt comfortable and valued – beyond just receiving treatment.”

The children were also provided with some snacks and, to prepare them for the next school term, new school bags, pencil cases, water bottles, winter flasks, sanitary towels, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, among other items.

“The smiles on their faces – both literal and figurative – were all the proof we needed that our efforts made a real difference,” Sono explained. “We also saw strong engagement from our staff, who volunteered their time and expertise with so much heart.”

Over the years, the clinic has had the opportunity to be of service to the children of the home for their healthcare and dental needs. “This day is essential for children because it highlights their importance in our communities and provides an opportunity to meet some of their most basic needs, such as access to healthcare.

“Oral health is often overlooked, but it plays a critical role in a child’s development. Access to regular dental care helps prevent these problems and boosts a child’s confidence, comfort, and overall quality of life. By investing in their smiles, we’re investing in their futures.”

Sono concluded that the clinic’s hope is that this initiative sparks more regular support for the vulnerable children in the community, not just once a year, but throughout the year. “As healthcare professionals, we have the tools to heal, but also the power to inspire. That’s exactly what Mandela Day is about.”

The home thanked the clinic staff and everyone involved in making the day a memorable dental checkup up for the children.
