Striders’ half-marathon set to mark 40 years with record entries and champions

Excitement is building in Midrand as the Kyalami Corner Midrand Striders Half-Marathon gears up for August 31—promising record-breaking participation, big-name athletes, and a celebration of fitness, women, and spring.

The highly anticipated Kyalami Corner Midrand Striders Half-Marathon is fast approaching, with over 2 500 runners expected to participate in this landmark event.

Midrand Striders Running Club chairperson Tsenoli Tiheli said the race, which has grown steadily over the years, has already seen a surge in entries and is on track to sell out before the closing date of August 22.

“This year’s race is unique, as it marks 40 years since the club’s first official run. Traditionally, we race during Women’s Month, but this year’s event is even more special as it takes place on the eve of Spring Day,” said Tiheli.

Adding prestige to the race, the 2025 Comrades Marathon men’s champion, Tete Dijana, will be present alongside fellow elite athlete and former Comrades winner Edward Mothibi.
The race will once again take place in partnership with Kyalami Corner Shopping Centre, starting and finishing at this vibrant venue. With distances of 5km, 10km, and 21km, athletes will traverse the scenic routes of Main Road, Maple Road, and the beautiful Glenferness countryside.

Tiheli said the event is not only about running but also about community, with schools, vendors, and local businesses all playing a role.

“Earlybird Educate will be showcasing their learners’ artwork at the finish line, while local vendors will provide food and beverages. The shops at Kyalami Corner are also expected to see a boost as athletes and their families support retail and hospitality outlets,” he said.

The race has attracted new sponsors, reflecting its growing popularity and importance on the athletics calendar. The winning prize money has also been increased, adding further excitement for participants.

“Hosting a race of this scale means a lot to both the club and the community. It’s about bringing people together, promoting fitness, celebrating Women’s Month, and welcoming spring in style,” Tiheli said.

Entries are available online at www.peaktiming.co.za until August 22.
