Minister explores digital infrastructure expansion at Midrand’s Africa data centre

Cassava Technologies opened its Midrand data hub to Minister Solly Malatsi, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the infrastructure powering Africa’s digital future.

Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi visited the Cassava Technologies Africa Data Centre in Midrand on December 8, where he met with CEO Ziaad Suleman and the leadership team to discuss strengthening South Africa’s digital backbone.

The visit formed part of the department’s broader drive to accelerate digital infrastructure investment and position the country as a leading tech hub on the continent.

Cassava Technologies, a global tech company with African roots, is rapidly expanding its footprint in South Africa. Through its integrated digital solutions spanning cloud services, cybersecurity, AI computing, and broadband connectivity, the company is playing a pivotal role in enabling business growth, boosting economic participation, and supporting the emergence of future-focused jobs.

Malatsi emphasised that building a robust data-centre ecosystem is critical to South Africa’s digital transformation agenda. “Cassava is one of Africa’s leading providers of data-centre and digital infrastructure services. “Our discussion focused on how we can expand data-centre capacity, attract greater investment, and strengthen South Africa’s position as a leading digital infrastructure hub on the African continent and beyond.”

He added that modern data infrastructure is central to enabling cloud services, driving AI innovation, and supporting the growth of local tech enterprises. “A strong data-centre ecosystem is essential for our digital economy. It also opens new opportunities for small, micro, and medium enterprises to build and scale digital services, supporting economic growth and creating the jobs of the future.”

The department of communications and digital technologies (DCDT) continues to pursue strategic partnerships aimed at building an inclusive and connected South Africa.
