Eskom pleads for community to report cable theft as Vorna Valley incident raises concern
Eskom calls on communities to report all cable theft after a cable theft incident in Vorna Valley was foiled by Ria Sebetsa officers.
Cable theft and vandalism continue to pose a serious threat to electricity supply, often leading to prolonged power outages, infrastructure damage, and safety risks for communities.
As a result, Eskom is urging communities to report any suspected tampering, illegal connections, or vandalism of electrical infrastructure. This appeal came after local security company Ria Sebetsa Security successfully disrupted an attempted cable theft along Harry Galaun Drive in Vorna Valley on January 5.
According to Ria Sebetsa CEO Danny Maduray, a vigilant patrol officer, noticed suspicious activity at a nearby estate and intervened before the suspects could carry out the crime.
Ria Sebetsa Security reported the incident, and a case number was issued. However, Eskom clarified that it has no official record of the incident being reported to the utility.

Eskom has repeatedly stressed that prompt reporting enables law enforcement and technical teams to respond quickly, minimising damage and service disruptions.
Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi emphasised that public co-operation is crucial in protecting the national electricity network. She encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity directly to the Eskom crime line.
“It is very important for community members to report any individuals tampering with or illegally working on Eskom’s network, or those suspected of stealing or vandalising electricity infrastructure.”
For reporting, residents can contact the Eskom crime line at 0800 11 27 22, WhatsApp 081 333 3323, or reach out to their local South African Police Service.
