In a bold and significant step to fight against illegal connections, City Power removed 2 000kg of electricity connection cables.
The successful operation was conducted on September 15, in Rabie Ridge Extension 5.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the action is part of their sustained efforts to safeguard communities and protect the integrity of Johannesburg’s electricity infrastructure.

“Approximately 2 000kg of aluminium cable, valued at an estimated R350 000, was confiscated during the operation. This significant recovery underscores the serious financial and operational impact of illegal connections, which continue to hinder our ability to provide reliable electricity across the city to paying customers,” said Mangena.
He said their teams uncovered and dismantled a complex network of unauthorised and unsafe connections in the area.
Mangena added that these illegal setups are a major contributor to frequent power outages and infrastructure damage, as they overload the grid, trip substations, and damage transformers.
“In addition to disrupting services, they pose severe safety risks, including electrical fires, the risk of electrocution, and potential loss of life.

Eliminating illegal connections is vital to stabilising the electricity supply in the Midrand region. Such connections not only inconvenience paying customers but also divert critical resources away from essential maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, driving up repair and operational costs,” said Mangena.

The operation was carried out by City Power’s Revenue Protection Unit, in collaboration with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, and private security partners.
He concluded that City Power remains resolute in its commitment to addressing this challenge and urges residents to assist by reporting any suspicious or illegal activities.
