The City of Johannesburg Region A healthy lifestyle programme brought music, movement, and motivation back to Rabie Ridge Stadium as residents embraced aerobics for fitness and fun.

City of Johannesburg Region A sports and recreation department continues to promote healthy living through its popular aerobics programme.

Led by Selby Jimmy Mashao, of Mash Fitness, alongside other instructors, participants were guided through dynamic aerobics routines, stretching exercises, and co-ordinated movement combinations, designed to improve endurance, flexibility, and overall fitness.

The programme, which forms part of the city’s healthy lifestyle initiative, continues to gain momentum as more residents embrace exercise as a tool for physical wellbeing and social connection.

Among the enthusiastic participants was Olebogeng Makgaka, who said the sessions mean more than just a workout. “I do aerobics every day, and us coming here together means a lot because you get to socialise with a lot of people. It is also helpful in terms of fitness.”

Makgaka added that weekend sessions are especially beneficial for working residents who may not have time to exercise during the week. “Doing this as a collective, this initiative by the City of Johannesburg in Midrand allows other people who cannot do this over the week to come. So, it’s helpful.”

Currently unemployed, Makgaka said aerobics has become part of her daily routine. “I do aerobics three times a week, if not all week. My group and I come together every day at 18:00, and we do this for fun.”

She added that while aerobics may look easy from the sidelines, it requires discipline and focus. “Getting the routine is important, because if you look at us doing this, you will think it’s easy, but it’s not. It needs you to focus. Learning the routine and the skill, doing the whole combo, and being able to follow through with your coaches. Not just doing it, but giving it your all, doing it with energy.”
