Blue Hills College empowers learners through career day
Learners from grades R to 7 had the opportunity to speak to professionals about the work they do at the career day, expressing excitement when doing so.
Blue Hills Preparatory School went about securing the futures of its young ones by hosting a career day on March 6.
The school hosts career days annually, but this year, things were different. The school featured speakers, explaining how their careers work and what to do when one wants to pursue them.

“We normally have these career days where learners just dress up as what they want to be when they grow up,” principal Lizette Baker said, “but this year the planning committee and I wanted to do things differently, and let the learners have fun while learning about what they want to do.
“We thought it would be best to get people from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Airwing Division, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) lawyers, and our resident chef [to talk to the pupils]. Luckily, more people offered to come and speak to our learners. It was beautiful to see our learners so excited.”

The learners took the opportunity to ask all the questions they had in the different sessions.
While some learners showed interest in the SAPS Airwing Division, most had a lot of interest in the session with the lawyers from the CDH law firm.

A Grade 6 learner, Remoneetswe Dikobe, commented about the session they had with CDH. “I really want to be a lawyer, so it was really interesting to have the lawyers from CDH speak to us. They also answered my questions well, especially when I asked about having a law firm with different departments.”
The school’s resident chef, Liberty Mamombe, who was also a speaker, emphasised the importance of schools hosting career days in the early grades. “I would really encourage schools to have career days more, because it gives learners focus, preparing them, together with parents. Career days also upskill learners, because they get to partake in the activities we bring for them.”
Learners really enjoyed the day. They also received goodie bags from CDF and muffins with pancakes from the chef.
