Court postpones case of Ivory Park teacher accused of raping learner
A 37-year-old Ivory Park mathematics teacher has been remanded to March 13 after appearing in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court over allegations involving a 17-year-old learner.
A 37-year-old mathematics teacher from Ivory Park will remain in custody after his case was postponed to March 13 by the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
The teacher appeared in court on March 6, facing allegations of rape involving a 17-year-old female learner who was reportedly under his instruction. According to information presented in court, the educator is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with the learner.
The incident is said to have occurred in December 2025, after the teacher reportedly offered additional private tutoring services to the learner outside of official school hours at his residence.

Members of the Norkem Park South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested the teacher on March 4 in Birchleigh North. Police reportedly located him at his brother’s residence after he allegedly attempted to arrange a meeting with the victim’s parents in an effort to have the case withdrawn by offering money, which the parents reportedly refused.
The Gauteng department of education has confirmed that it has initiated internal investigations into the matter. Authorities have emphasised that the case will now proceed through the legal process, while the department handles the matter administratively.
In a statement released on March 5, Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane expressed the department’s deep concern over the allegations, stating that educators are entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing and guiding learners, and that they must always contribute towards ensuring the safety, well-being, and development of learners at all times.

The department has also reached out to the learner’s family to offer therapeutic and counseling services during this difficult time.
Speaking to Newsroom Afrika media on March 6 at the court, Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona acknowledged the seriousness of the incident, noting the department’s ongoing efforts to vet educators and ensure the safety of learners within the school environment.
However, he also emphasised the importance of maintaining the continuity of educational services, urging parents not to be disrupted, and to allow the legal process to take its course.
