Boulders taxi rank cries neglect over pothole problem

One of the busiest taxi ranks in Midrand is facing a major pothole problem, putting both drivers and passengers in unsafe conditions.

Boulders taxi rank calls negligence, as more potholes form in and around the rank, causing dangerous conditions for drivers and passengers.

The taxi rank has become a central transport hub for the residents of Midrand, but with the lack of infrastructural maintenance on the roads, taxi drivers suffer from poor working conditions.

One of the drivers, Zathu Ngema, stated that this has been an ongoing issue, where they have tried to report it, but the only response they have received, by far, is the municipality sending people to do small temporary patches on the potholes. “Firstly, these roads are too small for the number of taxis that operate here. They are also too old. Then, there are so many potholes with water all over. Even though we do report these, the only thing I have seen is them do is just sending these young people who come here to do small and temporary cover ups.”

When asked about these conditions head of department for regional operations at Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) Khayalethu Gqibitole stated that they are aware of the difficulties and potholes at the rank, and that repairs are planned for next month. “We are fully aware of the ongoing challenges at the Boulders taxi rank. The situation has made it increasingly difficult for our teams to carry out their duties effectively, as taxis are frequently parked on the roadway obstructing access and operations. Attempts by our personnel to address the obstruction and request that vehicles be moved have, on several occasions, been met with hostility and, at times, aggressive behaviour.

“This creates a high-risk environment that compromises the safety and well-being of our staff, but the repairs are scheduled for the month of April 2026.”
