Blue Hills Preparatory prepares its learners with insightful career exhibition
Different professions were exhibited for the learners, so they could discover their interest in the career, rather than just dressing up and going to school.
Blue Hills Preparatory hosted an insightful career day exhibition for grades R to 7 learners on March 6.
The day was an effort to help the learners make informed decisions on their careers, right before high school.
Traditionally, the school hosts a career day to teach learners about different professions and career paths, but this year the school’s planning committee, together with the principal, decided to expand the initiative into a five-day career exhibition, aimed at educating and motivating learners about different career opportunities.

“We normally have these career days where learners just dress up as what they want to be when they grow up, but this year, the planning committee and I wanted to do things differently, and let the learners have fun while learning about what they want to do,” said principal Lizette Baker.

“We were very lucky to have many speakers from various places, including SAPS Airwing Division pilots, lawyers from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, and our resident chef volunteer to come and speak to our learners, and it was beautiful to see our learners so excited.”
Stakeholders from a variety of sectors were present, starting on Monday with Metro Police spokeswoman Sylvia Masubuko and continuing on Tuesday with clinical psychologist Rory Baker, who discussed jobs in psychology.
The Axon Security team conducted the session on Thursday, introducing students to jobs in the security industry, while former professional soccer player Esrom Nyandoro offered insights into life in professional sport on Wednesday.

Then, on Friday morning, Kedibone Mulaudzi, a South African comedian, opened the exhibition by entertaining and inspiring students with his speech.
Learners had the pleasure of asking all the questions they had in the different sessions. Grade 6 learner Remoneetswe Dikobe commented about the session they had with Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr. “I really want to be a lawyer, so it was really interesting to have the lawyers from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr speak to us.
They also answered my questions well, especially when I asked about having a law firm with different departments.”

Speakers came in numbers on the last day, including a make-up artist, an entrepreneur who is also a parent at the school, and the school’s resident chef, Liberty Mamombe. Mamombe emphasised the importance of schools hosting career days for the early grades.
“I would really encourage schools to have career days more, because it gives learners focus and prepares them, together with parents, earlier. Career days also upskill learners, because they get to partake in the activities we bring for them.”
The learners enjoyed their the exhibition, learning about the different careers they could get into, and also receiving beautiful gifts from the chef and the lawyers from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr.
