Repairs planned as Midrand taxi rank conditions worsen

The JRA responds to the awful pothole conditions at Midrand's taxi hub by scheduling repairs for the next month.

Potholes are developing around the Boulders taxi rank on Market Street and Old Pretoria Main Road, endangering both drivers and passengers.

The taxi rank has become a central transport hub for residents of Midrand, and with the lack of infrastructural maintenance on the roads, taxi drivers suffer from poor working conditions.

A taxi driver at the rank, Zathu Ngema, said that this had been an ongoing issue which they have reported, but the only response they have received was the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) sending people to do small temporary patches on the potholes.

In response to the concerns surrounding these potholes, JRA head of department for regional operations, Khayalethu Gqibitole, said, “We are fully aware of the ongoing challenges at the Boulders taxi rank.

The situation has made it increasingly difficult for our teams to carry out their duties effectively, as taxis are frequently parked on the roadway, obstructing access and operations.

Attempts by our personnel to address the obstruction and request that vehicles be moved have, on several occasions, been met with hostility and, at times, aggressive behaviour.

“This creates a high-risk environment that compromises the safety and well-being of our staff. But the repairs are scheduled for April.”
