Councillor steps in over partying at Beaulieu Bird Sanctuary
A peaceful space for families and loved ones to enjoy picnics and small gatherings is being turned into a party spot, even though that is prohibited.
The misuse of the Beaulieu Bird Sanctuary in Kyalami has raised concerns among residents, who worry about preserving the park.
Ward 94 councillor David Foley conducted an oversight visit to the park, where he addressed the misuse of the park, explaining that residents need to start adhering to the times set out for them to use the park and stop hosting parties that include alcohol usage and smoking, which is prohibited.

During this oversight visit, Foley said that the purpose of the visit is to further understand the issue, find ways to tackle it and make sure that the sanctuary remains safe and protected for residents.
“We are here today to make sure that everything is in order and to also speak to the park ranger about how she usually tackles these problems when they occur.”

He explained that because this is a bird sanctuary, there are different regulations, including no drinking or smoking. Residents and visitors are expected to adhere to these regulations.
The sanctuary is known for its peaceful and quiet green space where people enjoy their walks, bird watching and spending time with nature.

The ward councillor said he will escalate the matter to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.

“City Parks are part of the conversation, so we are going to see what to do about this problem because the park needs to be locked at night so that people can’t come in and wander around here.

There are clear instructions when entering the park that it should be opened from six in the morning to six at night, so by 18:00 the park needs to be closed, and that is another aspect that we need reinforced,” said Foley.
