La Luma app to bring change to single mothers

A single mother took her pain and struggles to change them for the better by creating a connection platform for single mothers.

Melinta Iyaloo, a 44-year-old single mother of two, is reaching out to support other moms through an interactive app called La Luma.

The Halfway Gardens resident said the app was designed to simplify the lives of single mothers by giving them a platform to connect, share ideas, and exchange contacts for services they need.

She explained that her own challenges after Covid-19 inspired the idea.

“I faced some challenges after Covid-19 where I separated from my ex-husband due to some things that were not changing. I decided to leave with nothing and take my children with me.

After leaving, that meant I was now on my own and doing everything by myself, which is what I really wanted. But it also dawned on me that if I’m going through this by myself, then other moms could also be experiencing the same. That’s when the idea of La Luma came to me.”

La Luma officially launched in May this year and is already operational. Single mothers can access it via the La Luma website, while Iyaloo continues working to make it available on Google Play.

She noted that mothers often suffered the most from a lack of support, which also inspired her to write a book titled 10 Things Nobody Tells You About Being a Single Mum (But We’ll Laugh Anyway).

“I wrote the book because I wanted to give a guide to other mothers and help them understand that, even as a single mother, you can still thrive, both as a parent and professionally.”

Iyaloo emphasised that the app was not only for biological single mothers, but for any woman playing the role of a mother.
