Councillor urges residents to use recycling site responsibly to avoid chaos

Ward councillor David Foley is encouraging residents to make use of the recycling facility inside the Kyalami garden refuse site, and to treat the site with respect by disposing of recyclable materials correctly.

Ward councillor David Foley is urging the public to treat the Kyalami garden refuse site with care and respect.

This follows complaints from residents regarding the overloaded garden refuse site. Foley followed up on the matter with Pikitup and conducted oversight visits to better understand the situation. During these visits, the councillor noticed that the recycling site was untidy and poorly managed, finding that many residents who use the facility are not doing so responsibly.

The site, which forms part of the broader waste management infrastructure in the area, allows residents to separate and dispose of recyclable materials in an environmentally responsible manner. The councillor stressed the importance of residents knowing what can and cannot be brought to the recycling site. “It is important for people to know what to bring for recycling to help make the recyclers’ job easier because bringing items that are not supposed to be here only creates chaos at the site.”

Foley emphasised that the site plays an important role in reducing landfill waste and promoting sustainable waste management practices within the community.

Residents are encouraged to separate materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal before disposing of them at the recycling point, rather than mixing them with general waste.

The councillor also urged residents to avoid bringing items such as tyres, wood, and polystyrene to the site. “When residents use the recycling site correctly, it helps extend the lifespan of our landfill sites and keeps our environment cleaner.”

He added that responsible waste disposal is a shared responsibility and encouraged community members to play their part in maintaining a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

The recycling site forms part of ongoing efforts by local authorities to improve waste management services and promote environmental awareness in the area.

Foley said it remains a work in progress to ensure that both the garden refuse site and the recycling site function better for the community.
