Call for proper use of recycling facility at Kyalami garden refuse site
Following the unwanted overload at the Kyalami garden refuse site, Ward 94 councillor David Foley took it upon himself to constantly check on the site, noticing that the recycling site also needs to be attended to, to avoid the chances of it being overloaded.
Ward 94 councillor David Foley has appealed to residents to make proper use of the recycling facility at the Kyalami garden refuse site, while also calling for greater care and responsibility when using the area.
The appeal comes after the recent overload of the Kyalami garden refuse site and the councillor’s continuous oversight visits to assess the situation on the site.
Upon arrival at the site the councillor realised that the recycling site was disorganised, although the recyclers are trying to maintain it.

Foley emphasised that effective recycling depends on residents understanding what should and should not be dropped off at the facility.
“It is important for people to know what to bring for recycling, to help make the recyclers’ job easier because bringing items that are not supposed to be here only creates chaos at the site.”

The recycling site is part of broader efforts by Pikitup to improve waste management services and promote environmental awareness in the area.
Moreover, residents are encouraged to sort materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal before disposing them at the recycling site, instead of mixing them with general waste.
The councillor also warned against dumping unwanted items, such as tyres, wood, and polystyrene, at the site.

“When residents use the recycling site correctly, it helps extend the lifespan of our landfill sites and keeps our environment cleaner.”

He added that responsible waste disposal and keeping the facility functional and clean is a shared duty between the community, recyclers, and Pikitup.
Foley added that continuous work is ongoing to ensure that both the garden refuse site and the recycling section operate more efficiently.

Pikitup spokesperson Anthony Selepe previously commented on how the signage outside the site can assist with educating residents about which waste is acceptable.
“The signage is installed on site to give directive of what is accepted or not accepted. Publishing the matter will go a long way in assisting to educate residents about what type of waste and which quantities are acceptable at such sites.”
