Friendship on the menu for Ward 132’s Over 60s club

The community of ward 132 forges a strong bond through monthly lunch gatherings, inviting all the senior residents of the ward for a time to have fun and unwind.

A close-knit group of senior residents in Ward 132 is proving that friendship and community spirit can thrive at any age through its long-running Over 60s Club.

The club was founded in 2018 by Ward 132 residents and the ward councillor, Annette Deppe. The club was created to encourage social interaction among older residents and build a stronger sense of community.

One of the founding members, Ria Human, said the group has had a meaningful impact on her life.

“When I got here, I knew no one, and then getting together for lunch made a big impact on my life because now I have made friends who are my age. We get to understand each other and understand the things we go through as seniors.”

Beyond the monthly lunches, members also stay connected through a WhatsApp group, celebrate each other’s birthdays, and support one another during personal difficult times.

For many, the gatherings have become a highlight of the month, offering a break from routine and an opportunity to spend time with people who share similar life experiences.

Members said the club has helped reduce feelings of isolation and created a sense of belonging, reminding them that ageing does not mean losing connection with others.

The Over 60 Club continues to stand as an example of how simple gatherings can grow into strong community bonds.
